I thought that I’d kick this publication off with something a bit different.

Space has always been an interest of mine, and so has music so combining the two has always been a treat for me.

Here are five songs related to space/space themed, and why I enjoy them:

Starman- David Bowie. A classic.

From the moment that I first heard the guitar, I was hooked. This song is a classic, and the chorus is very hooky.

Bowie was an amazing storyteller in his music, and he knew how to craft a catchy tune. Yeah, I could have put other songs here like Space Oddity, but there’s something about Starman that just makes it… chef’s kiss.

Maybe it’s the groove from the verses guitar and bass that makes you want to bob your head up and down as Bowie’s vocals take you on a journey across time and space to tell you the story of Ziggy Stardust.

It’s well constructed, mastered and ahead of its time in many ways. It deserves to be recognised for the masterpiece it is. The fusion of instruments, styles and the harmonics make it out of this world…

… Pardon the pun.

Spaceman — Babylon Zoo

This was a one hit wonder for the band. Many people know the song from the Levi’s Ad in the 90s, and that sped up voice at the start, and many people were dissappointed when they heard the full song.

For me, it is a grungey tale of feeling out of place in society. And one man’s fantasy of being beamed into space, and out of the world he feels alien to. It starts to grow on you in a weird way after a while.

Although the chorus isn’t sped up, the guitars in it are pretty rad. I like it a lot, it adds a lot of the chaos of the song. Of wanting off the ride. The screams in the breakdown add to the atmopshere a lot.

The claustrophobia of life. The changing tempos of the song. Makes for a good listen.

Manfred Mann’s Earth Band — Angels At My Gate

Yes, I know that he’s singing about “angels”, but to some people, angels are alien. Spacemen, out of this world. And the introduction chords are eerie, almost ethereal, like an alien spacecraft, a surreal moment in history.

In the second verse, they hook you into the song. The flutes sound like the aliens landing, and the chorus synths are very dramatic. It makes you feel like you’re going on a space trip and arriving in the middle of a desert town.

The alien/space age vocals in the breakdown add so much to the song and they sound like the aliens trying to communicate to the people in the town.

The additive synths add exterestrial layers to the song and make it otherworldly.

Chris de Burgh, A Spaceman Came Travelling

This is a classic Christmas song, I don’t care what anyone says.

The chorus is one of the catchiest things on earth, and the unique twist of Jesus’s birth and him being a spaceman has never been repeated.

The instruments create a chilling atmosphere. It’s a lullaby, a ballad, a uniquem recount. It goes with the imagery of the song lyrics perfectly.

I love how it builds up as well. The build up hooks you into the song. It’s worth it for that alone.

Punto 40 Rauw Alejandro x Baby Rasta

Yes, I know that this is a song about a gun and about partying, and that this is a remake of the original Punto 40 by Baby Rasta but the aesthetics and beat of this song is phenomenal.

The production of the video itself and the sound quality is amazing.

The visuals, and the beat go so well with the space prison theme. It’s a work of art within itself. Actually,Rauw’s whole album, Saturno is space themed.

If you’re into 80s/90s style beats with a modern twist and space, then you could go and check it out. It’s very experimental, though.
